Prof. Mario Diani

Profile :

Mario Diani is Professor of Sociology at the University of Trento and Visiting Research Professor in the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

 

He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Milan (1982) and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Turin (1987).

 

Before joining the University of Trento in 2001 he taught at the Bocconi University of Milan (1988-1993), the University of Pavia (1993-1996) and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (1996-2001), where he held the Chair of Sociology and also served as Head of the Department of Government.

 

Mario Diani has been the European editor of Mobilization. The international journal of theory and research on social movements and collective behavior since 1997. He has also served as editorial board member for Quaderni di Scienza Politica, European Journal of Social Theory, Environmental Politics, South European Society and Politics, Quaderni di Sociologia and Trajectos. He has recently been invited to join the Scientific Committee of the Carlo Cattaneo Institute in Bologna, and the editorial board of Contemporary Sociology.

Current research topics :

Main research interests include social movements and collective action theory; network analysis of political processes; environmental politics; ethnonationalist movements; social capital; voluntary action.

Research activities :

Current or recently concluded major projects include the following:

 

2003-Present “International peace protest survey”, coordinated by Stefan Waalgrave of the University of Antwerp.

 

2000-2003 “Networks of civic organizations in Britain”, Economic and Social Research Council.

 

2001-Present “Multicultural Democracy in European Cities”, coordinated by Meindert Fennema and Jean Tillie of the University of Amsterdam.
